Description
The awarding authority aims to deliver a thriving farming and food sector with an improving net environmental benefit, to promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production and to deliver a sustainable, secure and healthy food supply. In January 2010 Defra published Food 2030, the Government?s food strategy, which sets out the vision for a food chain in which consumers are informed, and can choose and afford healthy, sustainable food. There is considerable guidance on healthier eating including the `eatwell? plate, which sets out the balance of food groups in a healthy, balanced diet. Dietary Reference Values provide guidelines on the proportion of carbohydrates, fats and protein in the diet, and recommended intakes of fibre, minerals, and vitamins.. On average, diets in the UK contain too much salt, saturated fat and non-milk extrinsic sugars, and do not balance energy (calories) taken in with energy expenditure. Heath problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity are associated with poor diets. To address these, the Government encouraged and facilitated the adoption of healthier eating through campaigns to raise consumer awareness and promote healthier choices, and work with industry to encourage product reformulation. There is a strong case for continuing to encourage the adoption of healthy diets, and this is set out in Food 2030, and reflected in the indicators to measure progress in its delivery. However there are many options for achieving healthier diets and choices will depend on consumer values, lifestyles and economics. The food chain has a considerable impact on the environment, being responsible for over 20% of GHG emissions in the UK. In addition, the food chain is not only a considerable user of water and natural resources (such as agricultural land or phosphates) but it also includes the largest manufacturing sector in the UK, providing employment for 3.6 million people. Therefore, changes in the food chain brought by different patterns of consumption can have wide ranging effects. Given the interest in promoting healthier diets expressed in Food 2030, a project is required to assess how this will affect the impacts of the food chain and identify risks and opportunities for reducing negative impacts, to provide evidence in support of the implementation of Food 2030.
